Ladybugs - A Natural Gardener’s Friend
Ladybugs, also known as “Lady Beetles” are a welcome insect in my garden. They feast on unwanted insects such as aphids, fruit flies, thrips, and mites.

Ladybugs are colorful for a reason. Their markings tell predators to eat something else. When threatened, the bugs will secrete an oily, foul-tasting fluid from joints in their legs. They may also play dead.
Birds are Ladybug’s main predators, but they also fall victim to frogs, wasps, spiders, and dragonflies.

They come in several different colors and patterns with the most familiar in North America being the seven-spotted ladybug with a bright red and black body. Red Yucca Plant - Simplistic Beauty:
Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as Red Yucca or Coral Yucca, is a striking, low-maintenance succulent native to the Chihuahuan Desert in Northern Mexico, covering a large portion of the state of Chihuahua, along with portions of Coahuila, north-eastern Durango, the extreme
northern part of Zacatecas and small western portions of Nuevo León. The Chihuahuan Desert is also the largest desert in North America, spanning parts of the Southwestern United States in parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

The plants are very drought and heat tolerant once established.

How Long Does A Hibiscus Blossom Last?
Hibiscus blossoms usually last 1-2 days. Hibiscus is in the mallow family, Malvaceae and has hundreds of species native to tropical and subtropical regions. They are known for their bright eye catching flowers which come in yellows, pinks, reds and purples. The flowers can be single or double-bloomed. Some varieties can even have blossoms up to 12 inches in diameter.
Blooming:
Most hibiscus flowers, especially in tropical varieties, open in the morning and close or wilt by the end of the day, lasting only about a day. However Hibiscus plants compensates for this short bloom duration by producing a continuous supply of new buds that open in succession, leading to a long blooming season. Orchids - Elegant and Delicate with a mystical fragrance.
A timeless example of simplistic beauty, the Orchid. Orchids are plants that belong to the family Orchidaceae, a widespread group of flowering plants with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant.
Date of origin
The origin of the Orchid goes back much longer than originally expected. An extinct species of a stingless bee was found trapped in Miocene Amber from about 15-
20 million years ago. The bee was carrying pollen of a previously unknown Orchid taxon, Meliorchis caribea, on its wings. This find is the first evidence of fossilized Orchids. They are believed to have originated during the late Cretaceous period, about 66 to 100 million years ago from fossil evidence per Washington University in St. Louis.
Environment Adaptations
Native to tropical regions of Asia, Australia, and the Himalayas, orchids have adapted to various environments and are now found on every continent except Antarctica.
Orchids many uses over the years
Vanilla flavoring comes from Orchid’s seed pods.
The dried leaves of Jumellea fragrans Orchid are used to flavour rum on Reunion Island.
Some orchid species of the group, Gastrodia produce potato-like tubers which were consumed as food by native people in Australia.
The scent of orchids is frequently analysed by perfumers to idientify potential fragrance chemicals.

Medicinal Uses of Herbs and Plants
Dating back centuries, civilizations relied on herbs and plants for ailments.

I’ve listed a collection of herbal remedies below. The good thing about them is they don’t have a lot of life threatening side effects that so many pharmaceutical drugs have these days. And even better, you probably are already growing some of these plants in your garden!

Echinacea and Holy Basil:
Stimulate the immune system; aid in fighting infections; may help reduce the severity and duration of colds

Chamomile:
Traditionally used for calming properties; can help reduce stress and anxiety; chamomile extract had almost the same efficacy as many prescription Sleeping medications when given to adults with insomnia

Ginger:
Known for its anti-inflammatory properties; can be used to relieve arthritis pain; used to treat nausea, including motion sickness and morning sickness

Peppermint:
Helps with digestive problems like indigestion and bloating; relieve head aches; has a cooling effect on the skin

Valerian Root:
used to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

Saint John’s Wort:
Used for mild to moderate depression and anxiety

Garlic:
Support heart health by lowering cholesterol and improving circulation

Ginkgo Biloba:
Support heart health by lowering cholesterol and improving circulation; can improve cognitive impairment and dementia

Ginseng:
Energy-boosting properties; can be used to combat fatigue

Plantain:
Used for wound healing and skin inflammation

SEED BANKING
General Definition:
Seed Banking’s goal is to preserve seeds as food security for our future. It is an example of conserving biodiversity in action.
Seed Banks are considered seed libraries, containing valuable information about evolved strategies to combat plant stress, and can be used to create genetically modified versions of existing seeds.
General Information:
There are over 1,000 Seed Banks globally. In the world today over 40% of plant species are vulnerable to extinction. Factors like pollution, climate change and habitat loss all contribute to this alarming percentage.
Seed Banks require funding along with long term care and upkeep. Some plants such as bananas, avocados, mangroves and about 20% of our native forest species cannot be stored in the conventional manner.
A study published in 2018 in the journal Nature Plants revealed that 36% of endangered plant species cannot be stored in seed banks because their seeds are recalcitrant, meaning they cannot withstand the drying process necessary for long-term storage in a seed bank.
Preserving Process:
In professional seed banks, such as the International Seed Bank, seeds are flash-frozen at temperatures as low as -20°C to -40°C. These seeds are stored in controlled conditions that remain consistently below -20°C
throughout their storage life.
Seeds in Seed Banks need to be regularly tested for viability and replenished to ensure their long-term preservation.
History of Seed Banks:
Nikolai Vavilov, a Biologist from Russia collected 150,000 plus different seeds. They were stored at an institute in St Petersburg, Russia in 1894 which became the world’s first seed bank - Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry.
